Reforming Probation Next Steps

Capacity today releases our response to the Government’s consultation on the future of probation services.

We have not sought to respond to the specific questions in the Government’s consultation document, not because we do not think that they are unimportant, but because we wanted to use our response to set out proposals which we think will help to create a probation system that effectively reflects local needs and which allows VCSE organisations to play a full and active role.

We have aimed, in particular, to offer recommendations which would:

  • help to develop a meaningful role for VCSE providers
  • encourage diversity of provision, innovation and a meaningful contribution by VCSE and other providers
  • recalibrate the commissioner/provider relationship and to create a partnership-based model

In addition, we recommend working with Police and Crime Commissioners or Metro Mayors in a small number of areas to develop a new partnership-based model for developing effective local service integration.

We believe Capacity can play a positive role, with HM Prison and Probation Service and others, to help to develop such a model.
