Transforming Choice shortlisted for Expert Citizens Award

We are delighted that Carol Hamlett and her team at Transforming Choice have been awarded ‘Runner Up’ in Expert Citizens’ Leading Others Award.

Carol receives her award.

It’s been a busy week for Carol, Managing Director of Transforming Choice and her team, who have been named ‘Runners Up’ in the Expert Citizens Insight Award 2018 for ‘Leading Others’. The award recognises those who ‘…are leading others in good practice for people with multiple needs; who are setting a benchmark for colleagues to follow and generously passing on the skills and experience that they have developed.’

The award ceremony took place in Stoke, and was attended by Carol, Operational Manager Donna, and two Peer Mentors, Nikki and Peter. There were originally sixty nominees for the award, highlighting what a fantastic achievement being shortlisted is for Carol and the team.

Carol explained:

“It means a lot to receive an award from an organisation that was started and is run by people who have experienced addiction, homelessness and mental ill health because those who have lived experience of complex needs can recognise a good service when they see one.”

Transforming Choice provides a residential detox and rehabilitation service in South Liverpool, designed for people who have become alcohol dependent.

Of the 15 staff members at Transforming Choice, 12 have either been through the 12-week programme themselves or have other lived experience of alcohol and drug dependency, homelessness and mental ill health. This means that they understand the difficulties service-users face and are better equipped to ‘accompany them along the road to recovery’ and support them in creating their own care plans.

On Monday, the service welcomed a new group of fourteen people. Although the first week can be especially challenging, it marks the start of a potential life-changing 12 weeks for the residents. The programme encourages residents to regain control of their lives and work towards independence. The team also support the residents to find secure accommodation, meaning they can avoid returning to the cycle of temporary accommodation.

Capacity continues to support the growth of Transforming Choice and are delighted to see the organisation’s hard work recognised by Expert Citizens CIC.
